This was a popular song made during WW2 in 1939. It became popular by being resonated with soldiers going off to fight as they leave their loved ones in the British military. The song became a film in 1943. I was introduced to this song by one of my British friends whos a huge British history buff and this has been one of my favorite WW2 era songs so far
