Description

(backstory cont.) Unwillingly, Starfire felt his paw raise above her slowly, claws unsheathed. he looked down at her struggling form and saw his face reflected in her eyes. He looked... empty. The only thing different about his face was that his eyes were glowing, blank, like he wasn't just about to [unalive] someone, and that scared him more than anything else. "NO!" Starfire realized that the cat who had shouted was himself, and his eyes widened. They were blue again! "I'm NOT going to [unalive] the cat I love!!" He screamed, ripping free of the spirit's control. The spirit's eyes widened in shock and fear, and Starfire smiled grimly. His flames shot high into the air, and behind him, he heard Crystal gasp in wonder. Starfire slammed his fiery paw into the spirit with all his strength, and he disappeared with a ringing crack and a large puff of smoke and ash. Overhead outside, one of the dimmest and ugliest stars- in Starfire's opinion- winked out. "Did- did you do it?" Crystal asked, shivering. Starfire nodded, smiling. A drop of salty water slid out of his eye and fell to the ground. Maybe his curse... could be used for good? "Starfire..." Crystal whispered, "I- I love you, too! And... I want to travel the world! I don't want to be stuck in this dingy little tower any longer. Your family shunned you, they don't deserve you- I want to leave, where we could be free- and- and together!" She flushed, turning her head away. "It- it's okay if you didn't mean what you said earlier-" Starfire swept her into an embrace. "Of *course* I meant it, Crystal! And I think you're right. Is there anything you want to take with you before we leave?" She flushed harder. "We're leaving right now?" "Well... If you want to wait longer, then..." Now it was Starfire's turn to flush. "Starfire. I want to leave now! The only thing I want to take with me is... you." The two gazed into each other's eyes, and then they set off. "Wait!" Crystal said suddenly. "Can I do something to the tower?" She turned, and, with all her willpower, began encasing the tower in a huge crystal. Starfire gaped in amazement. "So they know we left," She explained. Now they were nothing but cold and distant, arrogant and unyielding. He sighed, turning his head to study his paw. His cursed paws. The glittering gem on his forehead twinkled mischievously, glinting in the pale moonlight, and Starfire frowned. It was all because of that good-for-nothing traveler! When he was 8 years old, a traveler had appeared at Starfire's family's doorstep, drenched and shivering, asking for food and money. And because of the kind of people his family were, always trying to seem better and kinder than others (when in reality they were nasty), they welcomed him in. Unfortunately, the traveler was a star spirit who held a long-ago grudge against his family. Starfire was the victim. The spirit had cast a curse that caused strange, glowing red gems to appear on his paws, forehead, and tail. Oddly-colored flames had also appeared on his body, causing others- including his family- to fear him. The flames grew and shrank depending on his mood, so here he was, living alone in a fire-proof tower given ever-so-graciously to him. "Staaarfire~!" Starfire snapped out of his thoughts in time to see Crystal leap on him, and he smothered a laugh. Well, he wasn't completely alone. There was one other cat who accepted him for who he was and didn't fear his powers. Crystal had fire-proof fur, and also had powers. She could create small or large crystals in whatever shape she wanted, depending on her needs. She was also the only one that could calm Starfire down, so his parents had decided on letting her stay with him- just in case things got out of control. "What is it, Crystal?" he asked, smiling. "You got a visitor today! He's waiting for you downstairs," she replied, grinning. "It sure took forever for someone to finally visit you!" Starfire's head throbbed dimly, but he brushed the feeling off, excited. "Let's go meet him!" When they got downstairs, there was indeed a cat sitting at the table. He was wearing a hood and cloak, and Starfire's headache intensified. His nerves screamed, *danger!* at him, and Starfire approached the cat with some misgivings. "H-hello! Why have you come to visit? W-would you like anything while you're here?" Starfire stammered. The cat paused, then threw back his hood. Starfire gasped. memories flooded his brain, images from years ago. Young him screaming in shock and pain as unnatural tendrils of red and black entered his body, flames sprouting from his wrists and forehead, driving everyone back- "You... Did you-" Starfire snapped, wrenching out of his memories. "Yes. I'm the star spirit that cursed you- but I want those powers back!" the spirit growled. "I thought that I was making life harder for your family-" "You WERE!!" Starfire felt strength surge within him, and Crystal rushed to his side, gripping his paw so hard it hurt. "W-who is this cat?" Crystal whispered. "He's the spirit that cursed me!" The spirit clenched his jaw. "You're not the only one that that hurt! My powers are gone because I placed them in you, thinking I would still have them *and* cause trouble for your family, as well. But now I don't have powers, and your family just got rid of you- so now you don't affect them at all! ...That's why I'm doing this." The spirit raised his paw, made a few gestures, and pulled it back as if tugging on a string. Starfire stiffened. His body wasn't responding to him anymore! trancelike, he padded over to the spirit. Mentally, Starfire tried to claw at the spirit, but he couldn't move. It was as if his body wasn't his anymore! He turned to face Crystal against his own will, and the spirit laughed. "It's no use trying to resist, little cat. Because the powers I put in you came from me, I can still control them- I just can't take them back. So you're going to have to be the one that [unalives] your family." It snickered. "How ironic! Their own son trying to [unalive] them, just as their ancestors tried to do to me! To prove you can do it, why don't we start with... This lovely kitty here!" He grabbed Crystal, and Starfire's neck muscles bulged. He wouldn't do it! He wasn't going to [unalive] Crystal! She... She was the only one that mattered to him anymore. Starfire strained away from her, but the spirit raised his paw and gestured again.
