Beauty and the Beast, a Zelda Fanfiction: Book Eighteen Author's Note: I just wanted to thank all of you for the kind, encouraging comments on the previous installments of this series! Even though I may not respond to all of your comments, every single one of them means so much to me. Thank you for reading Beauty and the Beast!! Rauru stood up, clearly offended. “Alright, Mineru. I’ll go without you. But don’t complain to me when you’re remembered as hard-hearted, temperamental Mineru who never got along with anyone and spent her life biting people’s heads off with her barbed comments and insults.” On that note, Rauru whipped around and plunged into the undergrowth. Vines and branches snagged his soft fur, but he hurried onward, determined to reach the scene of the fire. The trees were a green and brown blur as he rushed past them - he even caught a glimpse of the amber eyes of the stag observing him from within a large bush. When he emerged from the woods, he choked on the hazy gray smoke that was spreading like fog over the field. He could see Sonia’s manor, a faint shadow in the gloom, and he could hear shouts and screams coming from nearby. He headed toward the sound, which was thankfully not coming from Sonia’s home, and soon saw flashes of orange and red flames amidst the thickening smoke. He’d found the fire. Rauru slowed to a walk and cautiously crept over the top of a ridge. The land in front of him sloped downward toward a small village, half of which was engulfed in flames. Beyond the village was a gigantic stone building with many turrets and towers - it looked like a castle. The people in the village below looked like swarming ants backlit by the glow of the fire. There were several men on horses riding around the edge of the village, shouting instructions. Rauru could see small groups of women and children huddled together a short distance away, casting fearful glances at the growing fire. Rauru could hear voices drifting on the wind caused by the roaring flames. He twitched his ears to detect the voices more clearly. “...our home, all our possessions...” “What are we going to do?” “...nobles can’t stop the fire. It’ll destroy the entire village.” Rauru felt as though a fist had gripped his heart. He had to help these people, no matter what the Hylians had done to him. He wondered how he could be of assistance, how he could possibly make a difference when the situation was already so dire... The answer soon came to him. Rauru’s eyes flashed upward, and he watched as an overhang on one of the houses, covered in orange flames, began to tear away from the rest of the structure. There was a man underneath it on a horse. If it fell, the man would die. Rauru sprinted down the incline, ducked underneath a stone archway, and made a spectacular leap over the back of the horse, knocking the man out of the saddle and out of harm’s way just as the overhang came crashing down in a burst of sparks and ash. The man he had rescued seemed too stunned to speak or move. He laid on the ground between Rauru’s front paws, his short limbs shaking with terror. His bright blue eyes were darting from one of Rauru’s animal-like features to another. “Y-Y-You...Z-Z-Zonai...” he stammered, beads of sweat appearing on his forehead. Suddenly, his trembling and stuttering ceased, and he asked, “What is your name?” “My name is Rauru,” Rauru replied calmly. “I have just saved you from a collapsing overhang, but I’m afraid there was nothing I could do about your horse. Are you...” Rauru began, but the man cut him off. “I believe you know my daughter,” he grunted. “Sonia.” “Yes!” Rauru yelped happily. “Yes, I know Sonia! You’re her father, then? It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir, a pleasure...” “Yes, well, you can get off of me now,” Sonia’s father huffed, and Rauru quickly scrambled to his feet. “That’s better. Thank you for saving me, Rauru.” “Of course,” Rauru said, refocusing on the flames. They were creeping closer with every passing second, consuming house after house. He frowned, deep in thought, his ears twitching. He had to find a way to stop the fire, a way to save some part of the village... “I’m just as clueless as you are,” Sonia’s father sighed. “The townspeople are relying on the nobles to stop the fire, but there’s nothing we can do except let it burn out. All of the townspeople will lose their homes, though. It’s a terrible situation.” Rauru grunted in agreement. There was a moment of quiet between them as they listened to the deadly roar of the fire, clearing their throats every few seconds as the smoke grew thicker. Suddenly, a scream from the outskirts of the village shattered the silence.
